Square

A square links two planets separated by 90 degrees, generally in signs of the same mode: cardinal with cardinal, fixed with fixed, mutable with mutable. It is the best-known aspect of active tension in Western astrology. The two planetary principles meet at a perpendicular angle: neither can ignore the other, yet their objectives are incompatible without conscious work of integration. In synastry, a square between two people marks an area of recurring friction, a point where their ways of operating generate conflict. It is not a sentence: it is a motor. Squares push toward action, resolution, and maturation. Charts with many squares often belong to people with strong capacity for building, because they learned to transform tension into forward movement. The typical orb is 6 to 8 degrees.
